  • Does electroacupuncture hurt?
Patients may experience a tingling sensation while being treated with electroacupuncture, which is most likely due to the electric current. Some minor bruising or bleeding may occur, which is the result of a needle hitting small blood vessels.
  • Can I have acupuncture with western medical treatment?

  • What is a moxa stick?
Moxa sticks are the most commonly used instrument in moxibustion: they consist of rolled, prepared mugwort, and are meant to burn evenly and slowly. Moxa sticks can be with smoke, or smokeless. In Asia, moxa smoke is considered to be an essential therapeutic element of moxibustion, thought to contain many beneficial trace elements. The smoke also has a calming effect, and its aroma can be quite pleasant.
  • Does moxibustion have side effects?
The mainly side effects are coming from the wrong diagnoses. And after the wrong diagnoses, people may use wrong acupuncture points for moxibustion. Therefore, we recommend you go to Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners to receive a session rather than doing it on your own.
  • What if I’m afraid of needles?
The needles used are hair thin and totally unlike the needles used for injections of medicine. Most people don’t even feel the insertion and those who do, describe it as a kind of pressure. There is no need to be afraid of the needles. If you are worried, however, mention this when you make your appointment, or at your first appointment so your practitioner can take it into account and use less needles for your first appointment.
  • How often do I need to have a treatment?
Usually treatments are scheduled weekly, sometimes bi-weekly. Many patients choose to, once the problem has been successfully treated, to attend treatment bi-weekly or monthly in order to ensure they stay healthy.
  • Can acupuncture treat cancer?
No, you can’t treat cancer with acupuncture or Chinese medicine. Acupuncture can be very helpful in treatment of side-effects of western medical treatment, such as chemotherapy, and for alleviating cancer related pain or other problems, but it cannot treat cancer itself. For this you need to seek western medical treatment.
  • How long does it take to heal the cupping area?
The time depends on your daily typical toxin exposure. We advise you not to consume any red meats, dairy products, junk food and alcohol and to avoid any toxic chemicals such as cigarettes and narcotics for a brief period of 24 hours post-treatment. This is to ensure your body can concentrate on recuperation rather than trying to digest ‘difficult’ foods or to process other toxins through things like cigarettes. Although the initial 24 hour period may be a little tender and itchy on the Cupping points, the time scale to fully heal ranges from usually 2-5 days.
  • Can acupuncture treat fertility issues?
Yes. Acupuncture and TCM herbs can be very helpful for those having trouble conceiving. Acupuncture can balance the hormonal levels to prepare the mother to carry the embryo safely.
  • What is moxibustion?
Moxibustion is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that is commonly practiced and mentioned alongside with acupuncture; these two forms of treatment can be complementary, and tend to be tied to the same principles. Moxibustion involves burning Mona sticks or cones to affect Qi and blood. The heat produced can warm acupuncture points and meridians, and drive away dampness and cold inside the body.
  • Is acupuncture safe?
In the hands of a professionally trained practitioner, Acupuncture is safe and entirely free of negative side-effects. Acupuncture needles are pre-sterilised, single use needles. They are safe and painless to use, and safely discarded after the treatment.
  • Is Cupping painful?
Of course, you will feel a suction sensation, but you shouldn’t feel any pain. In case that your muscles are really tight and your tissues are very stagnant, you may experience a degree of soreness; however, it should be quite slight, and it will subside in a few minutes. If, for any reason, you do feel any pain, let your therapist know, and they can loosen the strength of the cups to make you more comfortable.
  • Who can use the moxibustion? Who are not suitable for moxibustion?
Since Moxibustion shares a theoretical base with acupuncture, most patients who could use acupuncture could also benefit from moxibustion. Moxibustion, however, does have some different applications from acupuncture: as it involves heat, it can only be used to treat conditions that are not tied to an overabundance of heat, and it cannot be used on some of the body’s more sensitive areas, such as the heart, neck, genital and joint areas.
  • What kinds of conditions can be treated?
Acupuncture does not treat western labelled conditions, but treats individual people. Three individuals attending the clinic with the same western named condition, say ‘migraine’ may receive three different diagnoses, a different treatment, but each make a sound recovery. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a full diagnostic framework which is capable of diagnosing and treating any known problem, but as with any medical system or treatment it is better for some things and less good for others. It is best you contact your practitioner to ask more about your particular condition.
  • Can pregnant women have acupuncture?
Pregnant women are prime candidates for acupuncture and much can be done to promote both ante-natal and post-natal care of mother and baby. The practitioner have to avoid any points which stimulate uterine contraction.
  • Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture doesn’t hurt. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, almost like a hair, and it is sometimes hard to even feel them being inserted. Often people report a sensation sometime after the insertion of the needle, but this is a pressure-like sensation rather than a pain.
  • What does Cupping do?
Either with vacuum or a fire, it creates a suction force that pulls the skin away from the body, and thus the underlying muscles and connective tissues, improves blood flow to the areas where the cups are applied, and throughout the entire body. It helps to release and circulate stagnated toxins that are trapped in the tissues, it also improves oxygenation, which promotes healing, reduces inflammation and pain, and helps relax the muscles.
  • What can Cupping treat?
Cupping can be used to treat a wide variety of health problems. It can help to loosen tight muscles and alleviate stiffness and pain in the upper and lower back, neck pain, as well as chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia, and pain caused by paralysis.  It can relieve migraines, reduce cholesterol levels, ease coughing, bronchial congestion, and asthma, ease the symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve varicose veins, minimize cellulite and stretch marks, improve digestion and relieve constipation.
  • How often should I do Cupping?
It depends on your specific needs and goals. If, for example, you’re an athlete and you’re actively training, frequent sessions may be your best bet; however, if you’re interested in detoxing and want to promote relaxation, once a month may do you well. Speak with your therapist about your objectives and they will be able to advise you about the ideal frequency of sessions.
  • Are there any risks involved for electroacupuncture?
Electroacupuncture should not be used on patients who have a history of seizures, epilepsy, heart disease or strokes, or on patients with pacemakers. Another recommendation is that when needles are being connected to an electric current, the current should not travel across the midline of the body (an imaginary line running from the bridge of the nose to the bellybutton). Before trying electroacupuncture, patients should make sure to discuss the potential risks and benefits with their practitioner.
  • Who can have acupuncture treatment?
There is no limitation in terms of age, sex or condition regarding acupuncture treatment. The very young or extremely old can also be treated. Children can attend the acupuncture clinic with their parent or guardian. All types of conditions can be treated – chronic or acute, severe or mild, mental or physical.
